Here is a breakdown of some of the exciting activities planned for Nursery this term

 

Knowledge and Understanding of the world

Explore everyday materials and see whether they float or sink.

Experiment – can the children make a boat that floats?

Use a camera to photograph blue objects during the hunt.

Print with objects that sink and objects that float.

Treasure hunt

Play with the paddling pool and small world equipment.

Look through a telescope. What can they observe?

Take photographs of the route from the classroom to the forest – to make a pirate map.

Take photographs of different activities and roles in the role play area (display)

Begin to use different tools on Tizzy, such as stamp, spray, and shapes for effect. View a world map, labelled with key countries where ‘Mrs Pirate’ will make stops.

Allow children to freely discuss places where they might have been on holiday.

 

 

Mathematical Development

Explore objects that float and sink.

Boat race – 1st, 2nd

Add a growing number of objects to a boat until in sinks.

Use small world sea animals in pairing, sorting and classifying activities.

Use ‘hands and feet’ to create routes for peers to follow

Find buried treasure in the sand, e.g. find 3 gold coins, find 4 jewels…’

Chalking maps and routes on the playground

Follow maps and routes made by peers.

Use a bee bot and disguise as a submarine. Create routes for the submarine to reach hidden treasure.

Flags from 2D shapes

Matching sea creatures to their silhouettes

Use appropriate language when describing boats (big/bigger/biggest…)

Compare different types of boats such as ferry, houseboat, submarine, pirate ship, tanker and rowing boat.

Match pairs of animals to go into an ark.

 

  

Welsh Language Development

Introduce simple topic related vocabulary, ‘cwch, dŵr…’

Sing songs, ‘Un, dau, tri cwch / peirat / pysgodyn

Dewch i chwarae yn y…

Continue with responding to commands we use in the hall.

Use prepositional language when on treasure hunt, ‘o dan, tu ôl, uwchben…’

 

  

Language, Literacy and Communication Skills  

Making treasure maps to use outdoors

Topic related books, ‘The Night Pirates.’

Receiving letters from Captain Patch as stimuli for various activities

Writing letters and drawing to Captain Patch.

Hot seating (adult dressed as pirate)

Children to devise clues for a treasure hunt.

Shared writing – A Pirate Adventure!

Explore rhymes and songs about pirates and under the sea.

Act out the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s Outing

Using photographs of scales, children to explore drawing patterns in sand using the bottom of a paintbrush.

Role play characters such as mermaids, scuba divers etc…

Make pre writing patterns with flags.

Create wavy patterns using cardboard strips with notches and shaving foam.

Use stencils to create patterns on the multisensory bench.

 

  

 

Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural diversity

 ‘Rainbow Fish’

Think of a special name for the ship or boat they will create.

Talk about pirates – are they good or bad people?

Show and tell – bath time toys (do they sink or float?)

Talk about water conservation.Discuss safety near water.

Devise a code of conduct for the expected behaviour whilst pretending to be pirates.

Make Pirate spoon puppets for use in the role-play area (with different facial expressions)

 

 

 

Physical Development

Turn a sinking Plasticine ball into a shape that can float

Threading to make treasure chest jewellery.

Children to play buried treasure with small hand tools and utensils (tongs, spoons, ladle, tweezers...)

Walk the plank (balance across benches)

Shark-island game

Swinging on ropes

A boat trip

Pirate themed obstacle course

Fishing – using under the sea creatures with paperclips and rods with magnets at the end.

Balance and walk across fallen logs.

 

Creative Development

Create pairs of animals ready to compare sizes. Discuss size vocabulary such as short, tall, fat, thin, huge, wide, big, long minute….

Decorate their own treasure chest (shoe boxes)

Junk model boats

Make pirate treasure (jar lids and beads)

Rainbow fish collage

Marbling on circles - bubbles

Bubble printing

Pirate hats

Make collage parrots forMrs Pirate.

Paper mâché islands for display.

Make shell pendants from salt dough

Tizzy pictures – focus on the colours of the sea.

Create mythical sea creatures using Tizzy and give them names.

Use the listening station in different areas.

Colour mixing – light to dark (focus on blue)

Paint pictures of journeys across water

Create dances from different countries

Invent journeys of different vessels to music.

Respond to music from the different countries that Mrs Pirate visits.
